Selling Houses Australia - S15 EP 6

SELLING HOUSES AUSTRALIA

In 1985, Romano and his wife Iris moved to Australia with their three children, and settled in the beachside suburb of Maroubra, in Sydney’s east. When their children grew up and moved out, the couple bought a smaller three-bedroom semi-attached home in this suburb they had come to love.

Sadly though, Iris passed away two years ago, leaving Romano living alone. His daughters were concerned for his welfare, and the family decided the best plan would be to sell Romano’s current home, and find somewhere with better accessibility where he could live comfortably with his daughter Eliana and her husband.

However, selling didn’t prove quite as straightforward as the family hoped. Despite being in an in-demand suburb, and boasting great original character, Romano’s home was situated on very a busy road. It was also tired and in need of a significant update. Desperate for some help, they called in the Selling Houses Australia team.

Creating a more inviting and spacious living space

The home had a typical ‘gun barrel’ semi-attached layout, with two bedrooms at the front, a living space, kitchen, and then a third bedroom at the rear.

While the existing kitchen was perfectly functional, it didn’t make the best use of space, and it was also quite dark.

To resolve these challenges, the team installed a flat pack kitchen to create a bigger and better layout, with new appliances and feature lights. They also added a new sitting and eating area. Large sloping skylights were also installed to ensure light could flow freely into the space.

New paint, wallpaper and furniture were used throughout the home to take it from old and tired, to fresh and welcoming. Wendy opted for modern colours and added warmth and cosiness using soft furnishings and rugs.

Luxaflex® Duette® Shades were used to cover the windows in both the living space and dining/kitchen area. These smart shades filter the natural light, and provide all-important thermal control. In both the living room and kitchen, the Duette® shades were installed with bottom-up configuration, in translucent Elan fabric and in Pearl Grey colour. The unique honeycomb-like cells within these innovative blinds trap air, which helps keep the home’s interiors warmer in winter and cooler in summer.

Luxaflex® Curtains were added on top of the shades in the living area, to soften the interior space and create a sense of sophistication – while also ensuring privacy.

More inviting and comfortable bedrooms

Though Romano’s home had three bedrooms, the third had a second door which opened onto the kitchen—making it feel like a thoroughfare. To create more options for the space, the team closed off the door and made it a proper third bedroom.

Luxaflex® Duette® Shades were used in each bedroom, and in two of the rooms, were also paired with Luxaflex® Curtains. These curtains provide all-important privacy, as well as lend a soft and sophisticated element.
